Abstract

Facilitated by the emerging data from smartcard systems along with meteorological observation data, this study extends the exploration on everyday weather impact on the travelers' behavior in regard to their travel decisions, mode choices, and daily regularities in public transit sectors. To fully take advantage of the enriched spatiotemporal content from smartcard data and the fine-resolution meteorological observations, collective trip generation features including ridership statistics and modal choices in a more detailed temporal resolution are investigated followed by an exploratory probe into the differences among regular travelers in terms of their sensitivities towards changes in weather conditions. Analytical results suggest changes in several weather elements would lead to various shifts in public transit systems and regular travelers demonstrate diversified resilience to changing weathers with overall prominent regularity.
