Abstract

This article will introduce opportunities in the biotechnology industry in Asia from the perspective of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). The unique challenges and opportunities for biotechnology in the Asia-Pacific region will be discussed, with particular emphasis on Hong Kong. Specific Chinese and Hong Kong government agencies and policies that can benefit biotech start-ups and funding prospects for biotech SMEs will be reviewed. Certain non-government support, such as that from the Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization (HKBIO), will also be covered. This article highlights Hai Kang Life Corporation as an example review of a business model that fits well with the Asian biotechnology environment.
