Abstract

International Sports Federations (IFs) have a critical responsibility to evaluate the safety of competition venues and climates where athletes train and compete. These federations often develop comprehensive guidelines to minimize risks associated with potentially hazardous environmental conditions, ensuring the health and safety of athletes. Legal frameworks require IFs and event organizers to guarantee safety of their events and to disclose any known risks to participants. This includes taking into account various environmental factors, including extreme weather conditions, which may pose significant risks during outdoor activities. These challenging environmental conditions would include exercising in the heat, cold, moderate/high altitude, and open waters. For example, in open-water sports, the most notable environmental health risks include poor water quality and the danger of drowning. Maintaining high water quality standards and addressing health concerns, such as gastrointestinal illness, are fundamental to preventing illness and fatalities during these events. Specific rules and regulations, such as those set by World Triathlon, focus on water quality monitoring and ensuring proper conditions for safe competition. Across all environments, undertaking preventive risk management, including monitoring environmental conditions, ensuring adequate safety protocols, and training lifeguards and event staff, is critical for safe competition. Key to successful execution of sporting events is the collaboration between IFs, local authorities, and event organizers to ensure all safety measures are in place, safeguarding athletes’ well-being and minimizing risks associated with the environment.
