Abstract

En vertu de… (2021) is an opera on the nature of human rights in Europe co-commissioned by a group of major European opera houses and institutions, specifically the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg (primary commissioner), Grand Théâtre de Genève, Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, Royal Flemish Opera, and Staatstheatre Saarbrucken, with final discussions with La Monnaie / de Munt taking place presently. The world premiere was in January 2022 in Luxembourg at the European Parliament, a remarkable venue for a work that questions the European Union’s commitment to global values, and will tour Germany in 2023, and Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland – including the vaunted Palais des Nations in Geneva – in 2024. As Stéphane Gilbart wrote in Cresdendo magazine in Belgium, “The composer has, in a score of contrasting and combined tonalities, magnificently succeeded in restoring the strong reactions born of the discovery of evolving legal texts.”
