Abstract

In this study, the total and speciated organics in particle phase have been measured to investigate their characteristics and airborne fate in a Hong Kong residence. The composition of non-refractory submicron particulate matters (NR-PM1) and 85 speciated PM-bound compounds were identified. In general, organics dominated the composition of indoor particles and would be enhanced with the occurrence of high-emission activities indoors (e.g., smoking, cooking, etc.). Furthermore, emission profiles composing of speciated organics in particle phase were compiled for these high-emission activities, with clear identification of event-related tracers. With real-time measurement, the source behaviour during the undisturbed period (e.g., period when there was no activity with high emission of PM indoors) was also explored based on the variation of identified tracers. This study provides a valuable insight on emissions, sources, and airborne fate of PM-bound speciated organics indoors and has evident policy implications.
