Abstract

Building on existing negotiation and conflict resolution research, the current study analyzed interaction data among collaborating American and Chinese group members. The goal is to explore what communication strategies knowledge holders of different cultural backgrounds can adopt to externalize their expertise in ways that are most conducive to expertise recognition by others. Random effects ANOVA showed that American participants used more strategies than their Chinese counterparts. Multi-group multilevel path analysis revealed significant moderation effects of culture and communication media on which communication strategies were most effective for obtaining positive expertise perception.
