Abstract
Much of the research on news avoidance today focuses on democratic societies. Most studies show that in democratic societies, the lower the education level and the lower the income, the more likely people are to avoid the news. However, in a survey of China this year, the authors showed that in China, the lower the education level and the lower the income, the more likely people are to consume the news. This is the exact opposite of the data from most current studies of news avoidance in the context of democratic societies. This paper will focus on the relationship between political systems and news avoidance, comparing news avoidance in China and Taiwan.
