Abstract

This project aims at designing a teaching and learning package, which includes a set of course materials and an interactive course website for the new non-credit-bearing supplementary course SUPC 1140 Pre-employment Chinese Language Examination Preparation, to help teachers to promote their teaching effectiveness and equip students with strong Chinese language skills to enhance their competitiveness in open Chinese examinations such as the Common Recruitment Examination (CRE) of the HKSAR government. The design of course material was based on the five common testing areas (levels) of Chinese examinations: (1) word level, (2) phrase level, (3) sentence level, (4) paragraph level and (5) text level. The design of the course website - an interactive interface for the course material with a large amount of online exercises and tests - was contracted to an IT company. A total of 22 students took the course and used the website. The scores of students in pre-course test and four consecutive tests during and at the end of the course were collected to measure value addedness. Evaluation questionnaires on the course content and the course website were administered to collect feedback from students. The course and the website were well received by students. The results of pre- and post-tests and course evaluations showed that the students made substantial improvements in their Chinese proficiency and the mastering of skills for examination after taking the course.
