Abstract

Global Citizenship Education (GCE) aims to prepare students to become active and responsible global citizens. Virtual exchanges play a pivotal role in achieving this goal by encouraging students to engage with global issues, participate in cross-cultural dialogues, and develop empathy and solidarity. This presentation explores how virtual student seminars can extend classroom learning, enriching educational experiences and promoting the principles of global citizenship.

In today’s digital age, the use of digital communication has profoundly impacted civic engagement and information flows, making virtual exchange an essential tool for fostering global citizenship among students. This presentation will share a case study of a virtual student seminar initiated and organised since 2021 in collaboration with universities in Kazakhstan. The online seminar was designed to provide students with cross-cultural experiences and enrich their learning experience, particularly targeting those who lack travel opportunities. The seminar focused on students from Cultural Studies, and English Studies programmes, offering them the opportunity to explore new subject areas. Participants translated classroom knowledge into presentations, engaging in knowledge exchange with Kazakhstani students from diverse cultural backgrounds and local students with varied subject expertise. Topics explored in the seminar included media representation of cultures in Hong Kong and Central Asian countries.

This presentation will demonstrate how the virtual forum facilitated cross-cultural learning, allowing students to present their research findings and share insights beyond the classroom setting. Through peer-to-peer interactions, students were able to ask questions, provide feedback, and engage in meaningful dialogue, thus creating a vibrant and inclusive learning environment. This environment not only showcased students’ abilities to apply knowledge to concrete situations but also to concepts associated with values across various contexts.
