Abstract
A permanent contemporary ceramic art installation at the new housing estate, Hin Fat Estate in Tuen Mun, Hong Kong, highlights the distinct features of the historical Castle Peak Dragon Kiln adjacent to the estate. This artwork combines traditional techniques (wood firing) with modern technology (3D clay printing), acknowledging the need for urban development.
The project involves the Tuen Mun community and the public, aiming to evoke memories and uncover old stories related to a significant ceramic ware. Participants are invited to draw the ceramic ware, which is later transformed into 3D ceramic objects using 3D modeling and printing technologies. The resulting ceramic artworks capture the memories, creating a tangible connection between the past and present, and promoting community engagement with history and traditions.
Alongside the physical installation, the project shares the collected stories on social media (@DragonKiln.Tales) as an integral part of the artwork, establishing a collective memory of the community. The objective is to create a central hub that harmonizes the past and future, connecting the individuals and their surroundings. The success of the project will be evaluated based on the depth of community engagement, aiming to inspire future cultural preservation art initiatives in Hong Kong.
This project seeks to preserve the heritage of the local community, reconcile urban development conflicts, and enhance cultural awareness. Its impact extends beyond the artwork, positively influencing the community. Additionally, the project explores the integration of digital technologies and AI in socially engaged ceramic initiatives.
