Abstract

The development of GenAI is disrupting and transforming language education, influencing the thinking and doing of language teachers and learners. GenAI tools, with capabilities such as text generation, summarization, translation, and more, not only empower users but also introduce a unique set of challenges. This chapter classifies these challenges into two main categories: challenges directly associated with using GenAI in language teaching and learning, and the ethical and societal challenges GenAI has created in the field of language education. Practical examples are provided to demonstrate the complexities involved in implementing GenAI tools within educational contexts. Furthermore, the chapter presents strategies that language teachers can use to address these challenges, including (1) communicating with students, (2) developing professional GenAI competence, (3) engaging in continuous professional development, and (4) adopting a human-centered mindset. These strategies aim to help teachers be better prepared and confident to use GenAI tools to assist their professional practices.
