Abstract
The cardio-brain axis is a bidirectional network of neural, vascular, and endocrine pathways that intricately connect the brain and cardiovascular system. While the heart provides the constant perfusion and oxygen delivery necessary for neural activity, the brain controls critical functions like thought, memory, movement, and emotion. To preserve systemic homeostasis, the brain’s anatomical components such as the limbic system, brainstem, cerebellum, and cerebrum cooperate with the heart’s chambers, valves, and regulatory circuits. As demonstrated by diseases like stroke, vascular dementia, arrhythmias, and heart failure, malfunctions in either system frequently have reciprocal effects. The significance of comprehending autonomic regulation and neurovascular integrity in clinical practice is underscored by shared pathologies. The influence of cardiovascular health on brain function and the course of disease are further highlighted by newer disciplines like cardio-brain oncology. The structural and functional connections between the brain and cardiovascular system are examined in this chapter, along with common diseases that impact both. The necessity of integrated neuro-cardiological approaches to diagnosis, treatment, and long-term patient care is also emphasized.
