N2 - Referring to relationships among built environments, travel attitudes and travel behavior, previous studies addressing residential self-selection issue emphasize the notion that people with certain travel attitudes would self-select themselves into certain built environments to facilitate their travel preference. However, this is not the whole story; travel attitudes may also be significantly influenced by the built environments and partially mediate the influence from built environments to travel behavior. This is especially the case when residential self-selection process has not effectively worked out in matching the residential built environments and individual's travel attitudes, or when both the built environments and individual's travel attitudes, as well as their travel behaviors significantly and simultaneously change in a short period. China is such a typical region of where both the above situations happen. Using household activity-diary data collected in Beijing in 2011/2012, this study aims to contribute such an empirical case by exploring the specific mediation role of travel attitudes in the complex relationships among built environments, travel attitudes and travel behavior.
