Abstract
The works of the compositional cycle Archipelago Sierpinski are inspired by the combination of the name of a writer that I admire and a fictional or real place with which I have a personal connection. In this cycle, all the instruments are modified and I seek to explore in depth the possibilities of modular structures. Therefore, the structure of the pieces is modular and the structure of the whole cycle is modular. Archipelago Sierpinski is a collection of collections, or using a metaphor, each work is an “archipelago,” and the whole cycle is an “archipelago” that is why the title alludes to the self-similar fractal, known as the Sierpinski triangle.
Aira/Sonora consists of nine (9) ‘Islands’ or sections (I-IX) and eight (8) residual ‘Islands’ or sections that can be performed continuously in any order; therefore, the piece must be perceived as a single movement, under no circumstances the work must be performed in such a way that changes of sections are perceived as such.
The work can be performed in two versions:
1. ONLY nine (9) ‘Islands’ / sections are performed (continuously in
any order)
2. Eight (8) residual ‘islands’ are interspersed between nine (9)
‘Islands’ / sections (continuously in any order)
Structurally Aira/Sonora sits at the centre of the cycle Archipelago Sierpinski; therefore, Aira/Sonora can interact with ALL the works of the cycle (performed simultaneously). Specific interactions with specific sections of different works of Archipelago Sierpinski are indicated in the score.
