Abstract

A new type of Girard's reagent T was synthesized, which can react with formaldehyde to produce electroactive adduct. Reduction of these derivatives on silver-based mercury film electrode (SMFE) is possible and effective in indirect determination of formaldehyde. The experimental conditions and the electrode mechanism were discussed. Using this method for the determination of 5.0 × 10-6mol/L formaldehyde the relative standard deviation was 3.05% (n = 8) and the detection limit was 7.6 ×10-8 mol/L formaldehyde. The real samples from house air were measured.
