Anchoring cosmopolitan communication studies in universal values

Abstract

Asian communication scholars Georgette Wang and Eddie Kuo warned in 2010 that breaking free of West-centricism should not fragment communication research into culture-specific relativism so extreme “that nothing is comparable and that little can be said of competing claims”. This seemingly abstract and philosophical issue has real-world political implications: to what extent democratic values and human rights are universal norms is a bone of contention in contemporary geopolitics. George reflects on how the “deep internationalization” project responds to this question, with particular reference to the study of media and communication in China, India, and other Asian societies.
