Abstract

Alternating-direction iterative technique for solving the algebraic systems associated with mixed finite element methods for two- and three-dimensional Stokes equations and the Navier-Stokes equations are formulated. This method, due to Brown [Brown, Alternating-direction iterative schemes for mixed finite element methods for second order elliptic problems, Thesis, University of Chicago, 1982], is related to the Uzawa iterative method for saddle point problems. Stabilization analysis for the Uzawa iterative method is given.
