Research output: Chapter in book/report/conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter introduces the Rasakāmadhenu by Cūḍāmaṇi, a relatively late alchemical work that is mostly derivative of older works. However, it offers a detailed exposition on the alchemical instruments not found elsewhere. This overview of alchemical apparatuses provides insight into the mechanics of alchemical operations, outlining the foundational requirements and technical know-how of alchemical practice. The author lists the materials from which objects are made as well as the device’s function, offering a rare glimpse at the practicalities and details of alchemical activities. Additionally, through the quotations of older alchemical works, the Rasakāmadhenu demonstrates the non-uniformity of devices, showing the innovation and creativity that preceded this work.
