Abstract
This is an overview of urban land development in China from the perspective of spatiality rather than the commonplace practice of reading it from the level of the city. It challenged many western -inclined accepts like marketisation and governance as well as spatial metaphors such as "central-local" and "tiao-kuai" relationships. To redress this imbalance, the paper proposed to understand the phenomenon from the perspective of spatiality, and the spatiality of governmentality in particular. It discovered that in the first thirty years of development, etatisation of economy and society was the common practice. The state was interested in etatising the time and space of human, land and other resources. Things started to loosen up in the past thirty years or so, as urban governmentality grows in importance, with the city being the object of government. The latter emphasized on the employment of spatial technologies to handle land development. Accordingly, urban land development has become more urban government-oriented.
