In the Qin and early Han dynasties, Fu Sheng 伏生 was a well-known expert on Shang shu (The book of history). During the reign of Han Wendi, Chao Cuo was sent to study Shang shu with the ninety-year-old Fu Sheng. It was said that the teacher's great age and an insuperable language gap combined to draw Fu Sheng's daughter to instruct Chao Cuo. Not every historian has put faith in this story, but Fu Sheng's daughter has gradually become a recognized figure in Chinese literature and art. Throughout imperial Chinese history, artists have depicted Fu Sheng lecturing on Shang shu. This can be seen in entries in ancient catalogues, annotations, and inscriptions. By surveying these textual sources and all existing drawings, the author of this article concludes that Fu Sheng's daughter began to appear in drawings during the Song dynasty, if not earlier. During the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, more and more artists reserved a place for Fu Sheng's daughter in their works. This trend was clearly related to the rising interest in talented women during the late imperial period.
