Abstract

Using both test data and production data, this paper examined and compared the patterns displayed by learners of different mother tongue backgrounds in understanding and using different topic constructions. We have three major findings: 1) learners do not seem to go through a universal stage of 'topic prominence'; 2) at early stages learners seem to use the simplest SVO structure to analyze sentences and as a result the complexity of sentence structures influence their understanding and use of topic sentences; 3) 'topic prominence' in mother tongue does positively transfer to a 'topic prominent' target language but this transfer is more obvious in later stages than in earlier stages because of the conservatism of learners.
