Abstract
This paper reports our study on the acquisition of Chinese reflexive "ziji" by English and Japanese speakers. "ziji" is a long distance (LD) reflexive and chooses subjects as antecedents. This is considered as a rule in universal grammar. Our findings show that both groups of learners accept LD binding, but the Japanese group is better in correctly accepting LD subject binding. Both groups strongly reject LD object binding, but some learners from both groups accept local objects as antecedents. The results show that in general, the learners' behavior is within the UG permitted domain and orientation of reflexives, and L1 is also playing a role in the process.
