Abstract
8-30 March 2025
11:00-19:00 Tuesday-Sunday
PMQ H506-507
35 Aberdeen Street, Central, Hong Kong
暮色之後 after dusk follows from a recent solo exhibition 暮色dusk in the
unconventional site of a former urushi manufactory in Wakayama, Japan. 暮色
dusk explored relationships between painting and vernacular Hong Kong neon
signage, traditional Japanese natural lacquer (urushi) and chiyogami patterned
paper.
Drawing from the Japanese poetic tradition of 'pillow words' (makurakotoba 枕
詞)—where seemingly unrelated words suggest classical poetry through sound,
association, or meaning, allowing the words to transcend their literal meaning
and create a complex web of associations—this body of work similarly
references familiar vernacular forms and situations.
In this Hong Kong exhibition, the works - including neon drawings, paintings,
objects and site-sensitive interventions - are reconsidered along with new site-
sensitive works that respond to the historical context of the PMQ building.
supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council (Project Grant).
