This paper lays particular emphasis on introducing the features and the value of A Course of Mandarin Lessons,The book is a piece of historical document that reflects the features of Mandarin in the later of the 19th century. With notes in both English and Chinese, A Course of Mandarin Lessons, keeps a faithful record of the Colloquial words and syntax in the Chinese Spoken Language of the southern and the northern, as well as shandong province in later Qing dynasty. It is of great importance in the academic study of both the Mandarin in later Qing dynasty and the teaching history of Chinese Colloquial Language abroad.
