Abstract
The character yi 埶 in the inscriptions on Shushi bells 叔尸钟、镈 is interpreted as yi 艺 (to nurture), she 设 (to establish) or yi 宜 (to facilitate), all of which had shortcomings. Based on the choice of word in the inscription on Duke Qiu of Zeng bell, which uses yi 埶 to represent yi 乂, this paper argues that the character yi 埶 in the inscriptions on Shushi bells should be read as yi 乂 as well, it is used as a verb, meaning “to pacify”.
