Abstract

Between 1937 and 1945, wars shook the whole world. In July 1937, the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out. China and Japan engaged in an eight-year-long war. In 1939, the Second World War broke out, and fighting spread worldwide. In December 1941, Japan simultaneously attacked territories of Britain, the United States and the Netherlands in Asia. The attack marked the beginning of the Pacific War. The war ended when Japan surrendered in August 1945, but chaos and hardship would persist for years. Its effects on the world can still be seen today. Hong Kong was not spared from the chaos. Situations in South China, China, Asia and even the globe engulfed the port city. Ultimately, Hong Kong was subjected to three years and eight months of Japanese occupation (from 25 December 1941 to 30 August 1945). However, all hands of Po Leung Kuk remained in their stations during the difficult times to care for those in need.
