It was presented by Janet Fong at the ArtBiz Asia Hengqin forum, examines how large-scale, high-profile exhibition platforms can serve as transformative experiential learning environments in art and design pedagogy. Drawing directly on Janet Fong’s curatorial and pedagogical practice, the presentation focuses on two major international exhibitions staged during Hong Kong Art Month: the AVA Art Basel parallel exhibition and the Art Futures Awardee Exhibition, both of which featured a diverse group of international artists.

This framework immerses students in the full exhibition lifecycle including curatorial planning, artwork handling, installation, opening management, public hosting, and de-installation. Students co-curate alongside professionals. Working directly with international artists from Art Basel’s parallel Exhibition and Art Futures Awardee Exhibition, they gain firsthand exposure to global practices and cross-cultural dialogue. This responsibility-driven approach fosters deep engagement, critical thinking, and professional agency that students become active creators, not passive observers.

A Replicable, Long-term Model for the Greater Bay Area and Beyond: The research proposes a sustainable pedagogical-curatorial framework.

By leveraging recurring large scale art events (such as annual Art Basel and parallel exhibitions), institutions can offer structured, year-on-year experiential learning opportunities, creating an institutional bridge between International academia and the professional art world that directly applicable to art and design pedagogy across the Greater Bay Area and internationally.
