Abstract

《初学阶》是早期西方人学习汉语粤方言口语的入门教材。它记载了当时汉语粤方言口语的用法特点,是研究粤方言历史的极好素材。从粤方言的英译中,可以很好地识读《初学阶》中粤方言的语法现象,也揭示了清末民初时的粤方言某些句式的语法特点。在《初学阶》中,粤方言的英译为粤方言句法的研究提供了很好的线索和参照视角。

A Handbook of the Canton Vernacular of the Chinese Language, for Domestic and Business Purposes was an introductory textbook for Westerners to learn spoken Cantonese dialects. As a record of the usage characteristics of spoken Cantonese dialects at that time, it was an excellent material for studying the history of Cantonese dialects. From the English translation of the Cantonese dialect, it is possible to understand better the grammatical phenomena of the Cantonese dialect in this book well, and also reveal the grammatical characteristics of certain sentence patterns in the Cantonese dialect during the late Qing dynasty and early Minguo period. The English translation of the Cantonese dialect in this book provides excellent clues and perspective for the study of Cantonese dialect syntax.
