    Abstract

This paper examines the red-ink papers of the examination archives of the Qing dynasty, and discovers the papers of Liu Xianzeng (Liu Shipei’s youngest uncle) and Liu Shicang (Liu Shipei’s cousin). The geneological tables on these two papers provide more information about Liu’s family history which was rarely noted by scholars. This paper also analyzes Liu Xianzeng’s red-ink paper on metropolitan examination in the year of 1892. Liu’s articles applies the methodology of the Han learning, and also deplays the factional characteristics of an Old Text scholar. The practice of Han learning in Civil Service Examinations, however, did not prove to be successful as seen from Liu Shizeng’s articles.
