Biography
Dr. Luyao Wang earned her Ph.D. in Biomedicne from Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in 2021. In 2024, she was appointed as Research Assistant Professor at the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU. Since 2023, she has served as Laboratory Director at the Lau Sau Fai Institute for Advancing Translational Medicine in Bone & Joint Diseases (TMBJ), HKBU.
Dr. Wang’s research focuses on bone and cardiovascular diseases, with expertise in molecular target discovery within specific protein domains and aptamer-based translational medicine and drug discovery. Over the past decade, she has published over 10 SCI-indexed papers as (co-)first author and/or (co-)corresponding author in journals including Nature Communications, Advanced Science, Biomaterials, and Theranostics.
Her pioneering work demonstrated that sclerostin protein exerts bone formation-inhibiting effects and cardiovascular-protective functions through distinct structural domains. She identified the cardiovascular-safe bone anabolic target - sclerostin loop3, developed Apc001, a therapeutic aptamer specifically targeting sclerostin loop3 (Chinese Patent: ZL 2019 8 0012952.6; International Patent: WO 2019/154410). This aptamer obtained both Orphan Drug Designation (ODD) and Pediatric Rare Disease Designation (PRDD) from the US-FDA for treating osteogenesis imperfecta and X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets, respectively. It has initiated China’s first industrialization process for a novel aptamer drug (pilot-scale production of active pharmaceutical ingredient completed).
Related clinical and foundational research has been recognized as a representative health/medical achievement for the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of Hong Kong SAR, and awarded the First Prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2023) and the First Prize of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award (2023).
Additionally, Dr. Wang served as the Hong Kong representative scientist for the "Tianzhou-1" spacecraft space life science project. She is a registered expert at the ISO International Standards Committee. As PI/Co-PI, she currently leads two General Research Fund (GRF) projects (12102223, 12102524) from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC) and one National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Young Scientists Fund (Category C) (82300988). She has also contributed to the completion of one National Key R&D Program of China (2018YFA0800800), one RGC Theme-based Research Scheme (T12-201/20-R), and one Guangdong Basic and Applied Basic Research Key Fund (2019B1515120089), etc..
