Dr. Danny Yu is presently serving as a Research Assistant Professor at the Clinical Division of the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2022, Dr. Yu Obtained his PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and subsequently completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Psychiatry at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) in 2024. His research endeavors concentrate on investigating sleep and mood disorders, with a particular focus on evaluating the efficacy of various interventions derived from traditional Chinese medicine, including herbal decoction and acupuncture, as well as psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). Additionally, Dr. Yu explores the potential benefits of exercise interventions, including aerobic exercise and Tai Chi, in improving sleep and mental health among adult and older adult populations. By examining these interventions, Dr. Yu aims to enhance our understanding of their impacts and contribute to the advancement of sleep and mental health treatments.
Dr. Yu possesses extensive expertise in conducting a range of rigorous research methodologies, including randomized controlled trial, epidemiological study, scoping review, and meta-analysis. Notably, he has successfully completed two randomized controlled trials (registered under NCT04403373 and NCT04515563) that focused on evaluating the efficacy of aerobic exercise interventions in mitigating depression and cognitive impairment among older adults. Furthermore, he has recently conducted a network meta-analysis and a non-inferiority trial (registered under NCT04384822), which provided compelling evidence that exercise intervention is non-inferior to CBT-I in improving sleep among older adults with chronic insomnia.
In addition, Dr. Yu has pioneered the implementation of the first stepped wedge cluster randomized trial protocol in Hong Kong, which aims to assess the effectiveness of digital CBT-I in alleviating insomnia among adults. By utilizing this novel approach, Dr. Yu aims to provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of digital interventions for insomnia management. Dr. Yu is currently leading another large-scale stepped wedge cluster randomised trial, which aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese medicine interventions on mitigating sleep and mental health problems in adults (TCM-driven Mental Wellness Hub Project, The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust).
