Research Interests

Professor Zhang is a faculty member at the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, with over 30 years of research experience in the isolation, identification, structural elucidation, analysis, synthesis, and biological evaluation of small molecules derived from natural products. His work has led to the publication of more than 190 peer-reviewed papers and the granting of numerous patents. Professor Zhang's current research focuses on drug discovery and development from natural resources, as well as the creation of botanical dietary supplements from herbal medicines. He is particularly interested in identifying natural lead compounds from plants native to the Lingnan region of China and developing dietary supplements from traditional herbal medicines aimed at various disease targets and pathogens, including cancer, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses (SARS-CoV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), influenza viruses, Ebola/Marburg viruses, athlete’s foot fungi, tuberculosis, dental bacteria, and cancer chemoprevention. His efforts have resulted in the discovery of numerous lead compounds with novel structures and significant biological activities, some of which have been developed into marketed products.
