Biography
Yuk-shing Cheng is a Professor of Economics at Hong Kong Baptist University. He served as Head of the Department of Economics from September 2014 to August 2021 and as Interim Dean of the School of Business from September 2023 to December 2024. He is the founding director of the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies, a research centre established in July 2022. His research primarily focuses on institutional and developmental issues in China, including income inequality, rural institutions, fiscal decentralization, regional disparity, state enterprises, trade, energy, and the environment. He has published in numerous internationally renowned journals, such as the Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, Transportation Research (Part A), Energy Policy, and China Economic Review. His work has also appeared in prestigious Chinese journals, such as China Social Sciences (中國社會科學) and Economic Research Journal (經濟研究). He co-authored the book Hong Kong's Global Financial Centre and China's Development: Changing Roles and Future Prospects, published by Routledge in 2017.
