Biography
Prof. KAN obtained her Bachelor of Social Sciences (Sociology) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She received her Master of Social Work and Ph.D (Gerontology) from The University of Hong Kong. Prof. KAN is a registered social worker who specializes in aged care. Her research and clinical practice revolve around an empowerment-based perspective with respect to older people and other groups. She brings this same nurturing philosophy to the classroom.
Prior to joining Hong Kong Baptist University, Prof. KAN worked in management positions in different NGOs, carrying out aged care service planning and professional practice. Prof. KAN has had extensive research and teaching experience with her previous teaching and research positions at The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lingnan University, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (formerly The Open University of Hong Kong) and Saint Francis University (formely Caritas Institute of Higher Education).
Her scholarly interests revolve around social gerontology, case management, consumer-directed care, health and social policy, long-term care, primary healthcare, process evaluation, environmental justice and climate change. Prof. KAN received a Competitive Research Funding under Faculty Development Scheme (FDS) from Research Grant Council (RGC), to study conceptual and practical approaches for introducing case management model to long-term care in Hong Kong. Recently, she received another RGC grant under Early Career Scheme (ECS), to study health and social care collaboration in aged care. She published her work in the British Journal of Social Work, Ageing & Society and other influential journals. She is the co-author of two books entitled “Relationality: The Inner Life of Public Policy (Cambridge University Press)” and “Interpretive Approaches to Policy Analysis: Hermeneutics for our Time (Springer)”. She also serves as peer reviewer for a number of international journals.
