Biography

John Winzenburg is a professor at the HKBU Academy of Music, as well as the director of the choral ensemble Cantoría Hong Kong. His research combines traditional, text-based scholarship and non-traditional creative practice as research in three main areas: 1) musical experimentation by Aaron Avshalomov in pre-1949 Shanghai, 2) hybridization and hybridity in Chinese-Western “fusion concertos,” and 3) cross-cultural interaction in choral music.

He and the Cantoría have actively promoted Chinese choral music in dialogue with international repertoire at major venues and events, including BBC Radio 3, the National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing, and the Hong Kong Arts Festival. His CD “Quotation of Queries: Choral Encounters of Hong Kong, China, and the Distant West” with the Cantoría was released by Navona Records (PARMA) in April 2020, and his Impact Case Study "Transforming International Practices with Chinese Choral Music" received a 4* "World Leading" rating in the Hong Kong RAE2020.

Scholastically, Winzenburg’s international publications include articles and book chapters appearing in the Journal of Musicological Research, Perspectives of New Music, Palgrave Macmillan, The University of Hawaii Press, The University of Michigan Press, Twentieth-Century China, Asian Music, CHIME, and the Journal of the Central Conservatory of Music. Winzenburg is the editor of the anthology Half Moon Rising: Choral Music from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan (Edition Peters, February 2015).
