I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies, Academy of Language and Culture, at Hong Kong Baptist University and an Affiliate Lecturer in the Department of Human Centred Computing at Monash University. I was Associate Editor of the journal Interpreting and Society - An Interdisciplinary Journal (Sept. 2021 - Aug. 2023) and am now a member of the editorial board of the journal (Sept. 2023 - present). I have also served as guest editor for special issues of The Translator, Translation Spaces, and Translation and Interpreting Studies.

My research is principally situated in Translation Studie (TS) and intersects with Media and Communication Studies, Anthropology, Sociolinguistics, and Human-Computer Interaction. Focusing on the theme of collaborative translation and grounded in an ethos of social inclusion and empowerment, my research follows two interrelated strands: 1) digital and technological TS research; and 2) translation and migration, through which collaborative translation and technologies are harnessed by ordinary citizens in community. I have a particular interest in how speakers of minority languages, such as migrants and local marginalised populations, use translation for self-expression, representation and empowerment in multilingual societies.

In my book (Yu 2022), I tackle the increasingly influential collaborative translation phenomenon, with special reference to China. I employ the unique perspective of an ethnographer to explore how citizen translators work together as they select, translate, edit and polish translations. My area of particular interest is the burgeoning yet notably distinctive world of the Chinese internet, where the digital media ecology is with Chinese characteristics.
