Biography
Prof. Alex Chan is an Assistant Professor (tenure track) in the Department of Social Work at Hong Kong Baptist University, he is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society and a full member of the American Psychological Association. He is a Registered Social Worker in Hong Kong and also a recognized Mindfulness and Meditation Teacher (IMMA). His research focuses on promoting social equality and mental health for the LGBTQ community, including areas such as homosexuality, psychological well-being, MBCT intervention, aging studies, HIV/AIDS, and social inclusion/exclusion of LGBTQ+ populations.
Prof. Chan was recognized as the recipient of the "Me and Health Care Provider 2024" award, distinguishing him as the only social worker and psychologist among the winners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his research on COVID-19 and related chronic disease was reviewed and included in the World Health Organization (WHO) COVID-19 database. He also collaborated with local hospitals on HIV/AIDS patient care, ageing and mental health research and worked to expand IAPT interventions to enhance mental health support for ageing HIV/AIDS patients in Hong Kong.Prof. Chan is now a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health and the Royal Society of Medicine.
