Description:
This research output reveals the pedagogical efficacy of the artist-led academic seminar in deconstructing contemporary ideology through the lens of cross-disciplinary ink aesthetics. Moderated and initiated by P.I. Janet Fong, this Co-Curricular Learning (CCL) talk features Artist David Chan examining his five-decade trajectory from traditional calligraphic systems to his pandemic-era "Ice Painting" series. It situated at the intersection of relational curation and political aesthetics, the talk investigates how Chan's creative praxis serves as a "networked negotiation" between socio-political data, existential anxieties, and emotional interpretation, exposing how contemporary ideology masks its own constructed structures.

The talks discuss Chan’s methodology of erasing conventional calligraphic certainties to generate open, non-linear scripts on Xuan paper. By mapping these visual strategies onto the post-2020 "Ice Painting" series, the lecture positions material fluidity as a primary tool for social commentary. Through this dialogic exchange, the talk explores the exhibition’s inquiry—subverting the epistemic question "Do you know?" away from passive external observation and reversing it back onto the individual, the academic discipline, and the changing universe, this output demonstrates how structured institutional dialogues can cultivate a "shared knowledge framework," validating the university seminar as a critical site for fostering compassionate visual literacy, empathetic cognition, and resistance to rigid ideological paradigms amid contemporary socio-cultural flux.
