Description
//Co-presented by HKBU Film Academy and the Asian Film Awards Academy, the first session of The Asian Filmmakers in Focus talk series was successfully held! The talk was moderated by Hong Kong director Adam Wong, who, together with guest speaker Yoshiyuki Okuyama, shared personal experiences and creative insights with students.Okuyama spoke about the beginning of his career, which did not start with moving images but with photography. What fascinated him was the way a photo could capture a fleeting moment and yet open up infinite imagination. Later, he had more opportunities to work with film and video, including directing music videos such as Kenshi’s Kanden.
Adam Wong asked about the inspiration behind such a unique and striking MV. Okuyama explained that it came from his everyday reflections: What is reality? From his perspective, true reality is the intersection of reality and unreality. Through his images, he hopes to keep presenting this question — what we see before our eyes, is it truly real?
He also reflected on the Japanese industry’s strong emphasis on “function,” where commercials must attract mass audiences and films are expected to deliver box office results. For him, however, creation can exist simply “for one person.” Each work, he said, is like throwing a stone into a lake, carrying a single, focused intention. This was also the spirit behind All the Long Nights — to preserve his own memories of a bench.
Adam Wong also shared his own creative experiences in dialogue with Okuyama, making the discussion more relatable for students. Through their exchange, the audience was reminded that filmmaking is not only about technique, but also about sincerity and connection.//
